Building an eCommerce platform for PLUS supermarkets

Background

For the last three consecutive years, PLUS Supermarkets was named the Best National Grocer in the Netherlands for its quality, product assortment, store appearance, staff, and shopping convenience. But its digital shopping experience was lagging behind.



The goal

PLUS Supermarkets needed a comprehensive redesign that would not only modernize its look and feel but also enhance functionality and streamline operations across the whole company. Great UX design is not about revolutionizing the wheel, but about iterating it into perfection, one turn at a time.



The process

We began with a thorough analysis of the existing website and app, identifying pain points through user feedback and analytics. The redesign focused on a clean, modern interface, improved navigation, and faster load times. We implemented responsive design principles to ensure a consistent experience across all devices.

Acting as the bridge between PLUS’s business and external product teams was crucial. I facilitated clear and consistent communication, ensuring that both sides were aligned on project goals and timelines. Regular stakeholder workshops kept everyone informed and engaged, fostering a collaborative environment.



Gathering business requirements

Conducting workshops and interviews with different departments and stakeholders to understand their needs and challenges.

Designing solutions

Creating wireframes and prototypes that addressed these requirements followed by rapidity usability testing.

Delivering final designs

Collaborating with the development team to ensure seamless implementation of our designs, followed by rigorous testing to iron out any issues.



Takeaways

The new platform went live in February 2024. With a year-on-year growth in both market share and online revenue, PLUS can expect a fast ROI, as the switch from a monolithic to a composable architecture also impacts the total cost of ownership. For instance, the cost of changing a product drops significantly when updating is not hindered by irregular release cycles. The new architecture will allow PLUS to further grow its eCommerce revenue by improving the customer experience through rapid innovation and value creation.
